The Life of Saint Chelidonia, Hermit of Subiaco
Saint Chelidonia was a hermit who lived in the 12th century, whose story is deeply connected to the territory of Subiaco and its mountains. Born in Capua, she retreated at a young age to lead a life of prayer and penance in total solitude. She chose a cave as her dwelling, known today as the Grotto of Saint Chelidonia, located in the woods of Subiaco, near the Monastery of Saint Benedict.
Her figure is a symbol of devotion, simplicity, and deep connection with nature. Tradition tells that she lived in harmony with wild animals and performed miracles, attracting numerous faithful and pilgrims seeking comfort and spiritual guidance. Her life is an example of how the mountains can be not only a place of adventure but also of contemplation and inner searching.
